INITIAL MARK MAKING

Mark making by hand and digitally, using concept research to inspire ideas. Some of these markings could potentially be developed into prints.

EXPERIMENTATION

Exploration making stamps out of potatoes, to create textile prints. Carved shapes/patterns using a scalpel/knife after marking with a sharpie. It was initially quite hard to accurately line up the stamp so I cut off the sides of the stamp to help aid lining up the pattern. Overall I did not like the process of using a potato for creating a textile. In future I'd prefer carving out the pattern in something else, possibly lino.

Inspiration for stamp pattern from mark making shown below.

These textiles were created using acrylic paint and directly painting onto the fabric. Taking inspiration from whales/orcas, lion eyes, wrinkles of elephant found on concept pages. I really liked this process of directly painting on the fabric. Some were done wrapped around the stand, some were done flat. My favourite ones are the last one which are inspired by the wrinkles of an elephants skin.

Inspiration take from concept research below.

Created stamps using lino and carved the patterns. I preferred this method to the potatoes and liked these results more. But I did not like the harsh line clearly showing each tile print.

INITIAL STAND WORK

This is a collection of photographs taken during my multiple draping/stand work session. To help stem ideas for design.

I didn't really like the effect I got with the drapy/flow fabric, I preferred the heavier weight fabric that had slightly more structure.

I decided to also drape with other garments which I think really began to progress my ideas.

For my collection I want to use mostly woven fabrics. I like the gardarbine twill fabric and the denim. I am going to do some print exploration with some of these fabric samples.
